Orpington Dementia Centre Garden Gets Makeover for Summer

In preparation for summer, the St Paul’s Wood MindCare Dementia Support Centre in Orpington benefitted from a garden makeover courtesy of VINCI Facilities (part of VINCI Construction UK) in May 2018.

VINCI Construction UK supports employees who want to volunteer in their local community by allowing them paid leave to do so. The VINCI company initiative is called ‘Stand Out? Make a Difference.’

As part of this scheme, 5 VINCI employees, Rick Gregory, Ken Trimmings, Tom Williams, Paul Stevenson and Tony McDonald, volunteered from Thursday 10th May to Sunday 13th May 2018, to refurbish the garden and repaint the main centre. The team chose to volunteer for the MindCare Dementia Support centre on Giggs Hill in Orpington as a member of Ken’s family used the service and saw the positive difference it made to people living with dementia and their families.

The garden at the St Paul’s Wood MindCare centre had previously been created with generous support from members of the West Kent Golf Club, providing a safe, secure, outdoor environment for people with dementia to enjoy gardening and other outdoor activities. The garden has proven to be quite popular over the years and was in need of a refresh.

In just two days, the volunteer team from VINCI refurbished garden furniture, fences and gates, and jet-washed the paving slabs, restoring the garden to its former glory. The team was also aided by some willing able MindCare clients who enjoy and prize the garden area.
